Gouden Carolus Classic
Gouden Carolus Classic (or Golden Carolus Classic) is one of the best dark beers in the world. This beer by Brewery Het Anker in Mechelen has a dark, ruby red color and a thick, creamy head. It is brewed with aromatic malts and it has a warm, round, malty flavor with hints of caramel. It undergoes a second fermentation in the bottle and it can be kept in the cellar for up to three years. It has an alcohol content of 8.5%.
This beer is named after the typical golden coins of Emperor Charles V, who resided in Mechelen. The legend goes that the Emperor would drink beer from Brewery Het Anker when he went fox hunting. It has won numerous prizes, amongst other the title of ‘World Best Dark Ale’ at the World Beer Awards in 2012.
